The Space Exploration for STEM Inspiration (SESI) program is a partnership between Cornell’s Spacecraft Planetary Image Facility (SPIF) and elementary schools in the Ithaca School District. The core principle of this program is that most kids find space exciting, and so they will be more engaged in activities involving space. These activities teach topics that are not astronomy lessons, demonstrating that any topic in STEM can be taught with a space-themed activity. The program teamed up undergraduate students with teachers of grades 3rd-5th. The teachers requested assistance with a specific topic or lesson in any STEM subject, and the undergraduates, under the mentorship of SPIF Manager Zoe Learner Ponterio, developed 45-minute space-themed activities that help teach that lesson. Workshop participants will learn about the activities that have been developed, and will then be able to use these lessons in their programs for 3rd-5th graders and to collaborate with schools in their community.
