Participants:

Participation is open to all 4-H members*

4-H Communication Teaching Assistants

*Counties can determine if 4-H members attend based on their participation in district-level events and or some other criteria (i.e. presentations to county legislators, ongoing work in communities to build capacity, other public presentation opportunities).

General set-up:

The first day will focus on workshops that will be delivered by undergraduate teaching assistants in Cornell's Department of Communications and professionals from Civic Ensemble. The workshop topics will be developed by the 4-H Communication planning team. After the series of workshops are held  the participants will have time to modify their existing presentations. All participants will receive a copy of the evaluation rubric prior to attending the event.

Concurrent to the workshops for 4-H members, Senior Lecturer Cohen will host some workshop opportunities for educators, parents and volunteers.

The second day each 4-H member will present their modified presentation in no more than 5 minutes. The workshop presenters will also serve as evaluators and will orient the 4-H members in how to provide peer evaluation. Each 4-H member will be assigned a cohort and they will remain with that group in order to provide peer evaluation. As a part of this competitive process winners will be invited to a state fair invitational.

The institute is a learning lab so there will be opportunities for 4-H members to bring a presentation or a performance they are working on. There is time in the schedule on Saturday night for them to refine their presentation or performance using the tools provided in the morning and afternoon workshops. On Sunday they will present, be evaluated, and obtain both peer and adult feedback.

New this year there will be workshops geared at parents, adults, and educators.

The NYS 4-H office is actively seeking funds to assist with accommodations. We will keep you posted in the Friday news on our progress.
